Instrumented Crash Tests

Instrumentation of occupant motion in staged collisions is performed pursuant to SAE J211 requirements utilizing MSI 3038-50G uni-axial and M53A-50G tri-axial accelerometers with a Diversified Technical Systems (DTS) SLICE NANO Data Acquisition System. The SLICE NANO is the world’s smallest DAS and allows for easy integration into crash test dummies. It can also fit into a jacket or shirt pocket for easy data collection during amusement park rides or activities of everyday living. All SLICE NANOs comply with ISO 6487 and SAE J211 data acquisition practices in addition to NHTSA and FAA requirements. Furthermore, temperature, altitude, and vibration requirements are met pursuant to MIL-STD-810E. High speed video is captured by an Edgertronic SC1 and Chronos 1.4 at frame rates up to 18,000 fps and resolutions up to 1280 x 1024. The primary advantage of a controlled instrumented crash test lies within the fact that exact vehicle models can be utilized to directly quantify occupant accelerations at various body segments such as the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spines in low speed rear-end accidents or any type of accident as remote controlled driver capabilities can be implemented. With the accelerations quantified, corresponding forces applied to the occupant can also be calculated in addition to corroborating vehicle crush damage. Instrumented low speed crash tests can be performed in an extremely cost effective manner depending on involved vehicle models and impact areas.
